Plumbing Code Practice Questions, Worked Through

Plumbing licensing exams are usually open code book, so the test is whether you can find and apply the right table quickly. Most of the fundamentals below travel across the model codes, but the UPC and IPC do diverge in places, and where that matters the question names the book it is asking about. Your jurisdiction's adopted edition and local amendments always govern.

  1. Question 1

    What is the required trap seal depth for a typical fixture trap?

    B. Not less than 2 inches and not more than 4 inches

    Standard fixture traps hold a seal of 2 to 4 inches, with deep seal traps used only where conditions call for them. Less than 2 inches and the seal is too easy to siphon or blow out; more than 4 and the trap does not scour itself properly, so solids settle. The number is easy; knowing what each end of the range protects against is what the exam is after.

    Under the IPC, what is the minimum slope for a 3 inch horizontal drainage pipe?

    B. 1/8 inch per foot

    Under IPC Table 704.1, pipes 3 through 6 inches are permitted at 1/8 inch per foot, while 2 1/2 inches and smaller need 1/4 inch per foot. This is one of the places the two model codes genuinely disagree, so read the question for which book it is asking about: UPC 708.0 sets a baseline of 1/4 inch per foot for horizontal drainage piping and only allows 1/8 inch per foot on pipe 4 inches and larger, with approval from the authority having jurisdiction. A 3 inch line that passes IPC inspection at 1/8 inch per foot fails under the UPC. Slope is a balance, not a maximize: too flat and solids stop moving, too steep and the water outruns the solids and leaves them behind.

    What is the primary purpose of a fixture vent?

    B. To protect the trap seal from siphonage and back pressure

    Vents equalize pressure in the drainage system so a trap seal is neither sucked out by negative pressure nor pushed out by positive pressure. Losing that seal lets sewer gas into the building, which is the hazard the entire venting chapter exists to prevent. Drainage velocity comes from slope and sizing, not from venting.

  4. Question 4

    What is the minimum air gap above the flood level rim of a fixture for a potable water supply outlet?

    B. Twice the effective opening, never less than 1 inch

    The air gap is two times the diameter of the effective opening and never less than 1 inch. It works because it is a physical break: no cross-connection can pull contaminated water back through open air, which makes an air gap the most reliable form of backflow protection there is. Mechanical devices are what you use when an air gap is not possible.

    Where is a cleanout generally required in a drainage system?

    B. At the base of each drainage stack

    Cleanouts belong at the base of each stack, at the junction of the building drain and building sewer, and at changes of direction beyond the allowed limit, with maximum spacing on long horizontal runs. The principle is that any section of drain must be reachable with a cable without cutting pipe. Vents do not carry solids, so they do not need cleanouts.

  6. Question 6

    A building has banging pipes each time a solenoid-operated appliance valve closes. What is the correct remedy?

    B. Install a water hammer arrestor near the quick-closing valve

    Water hammer is the shock wave from moving water stopping abruptly, and the code answer is an arrestor sized and installed near the quick-closing valve that causes it. Raising pressure makes it worse. Upsizing all the pipe is expensive and does not address the shock, and a check valve at the meter can actually create a closed system that needs thermal expansion control of its own.

How to get value out of practice questions

  • Tab your code book by chapter and practice with the tabs you will bring. Lookup speed is the skill being graded.
  • Learn sizing tables as relationships, not as isolated numbers. Knowing why a table trends the way it does catches your own errors.
  • Whenever a question involves slope, sizing or fixture units, check whether it is asking for a minimum or a maximum. That word decides the answer.
  • Confirm whether your jurisdiction adopts the UPC or IPC and which edition, then study that book. The fundamentals travel; the specifics do not.
