Network+ or Security+ First? How to Choose

This is one of the most common questions in IT careers, and most answers online are secretly sponsored by whichever course the writer sells. Here is the honest version: it depends on what you already do all day, and on which door you are trying to open next.

What each one proves

Network+ proves you understand how networks actually move traffic: the OSI model in practice, ports and protocols, subnetting, switching and routing, wireless, and methodical troubleshooting of network failures. Security+ proves you can think about risk and defense: threats and attack surfaces, security architecture, identity and access, hardening, monitoring, and incident response. Security+ quietly assumes you already have the networking. Nearly every security concept sits on top of a networking concept.

The practical answer

• ›Coming from help desk or general IT support with shaky subnetting? Take Network+ first. Security+ will be twice as easy afterward, and you will actually understand the material instead of memorizing it.
• ›Already working with networks daily, comfortable reading a firewall rule and explaining what a VLAN does? Skip to Security+. You will pick up the remaining network theory as you go.
• ›Aiming at government or defense contracting work? Security+ is the one that satisfies common federal baseline requirements, and many of those roles want it specifically. That can justify going straight there.
• ›Aiming at network engineering rather than security? Network+ then vendor certs is the cleaner path, and Security+ can wait.

Either way, train the same muscle

Both exams have shifted toward scenario and performance based questions, which means passive study hits a ceiling. The skill being tested is applying the concept to a situation: here is the symptom, here is the topology, what is your move? Whichever exam you pick, spend most of your prep answering realistic scenarios and reviewing your misses, not rereading definitions you already recognize.
