The Journeyman Electrician Exam: What to Expect and How to Prepare

The journeyman exam is unlike most tests because it is open book almost everywhere. You bring your code book. That sounds generous until you sit down and discover the real exam is speed: dozens of questions, a hard time limit, and answers that each live somewhere in a thousand pages of the NEC. The electricians who fail usually know the trade fine. They lose to the clock.

Know your jurisdiction first

Licensing is state and sometimes city level, so before anything else, get the exam bulletin for your jurisdiction. It tells you the question count, the time limit, which NEC edition is in force, what you may bring, and how the content is weighted. Ten minutes with that document beats a week of studying the wrong code cycle. Everything below is the common shape, but your bulletin wins every disagreement.

The three skills the exam actually tests

• ›Code navigation speed. Finding the right article fast is a trained skill. Learn the structure of the NEC, use the index like a pro, and tab your book the way your jurisdiction allows. Practice timed lookups until common territory like grounding, conductor ampacity, and box fill takes seconds, not minutes.
• ›Calculations. Conductor sizing with derating, overcurrent protection, box and conduit fill, motor circuits, and service load calculations. These are pattern problems: the same handful of procedures with different numbers. Drill the procedures until they are mechanical.
• ›Grounding and bonding, cold. It is the most heavily tested subject on most journeyman exams and the one where guessing fails, because the wrong answers are written to sound right.

How to train for it

Split your prep time in thirds. One third learning and reviewing concepts, one third doing calculations by hand until the patterns are automatic, and one third answering exam style questions against the clock with your code book open. That last third is the one most people skip, and it is the one that decides the outcome. The exam is a performance, and you do not get good at performances by reading about them.
