EPA 608 Type II: The Section That Decides Your Universal

If you are going for Universal, Type II is the section that decides it for most people. Core is a rules exam you can reason your way through. Type I is small appliances and stays narrow. Type III is low pressure chillers that many techs never touch. Type II is high pressure equipment, which is nearly everything in residential and light commercial work, and it is where the detail lives.

What Type II actually covers

Type II is high pressure and very high pressure appliances: residential split systems and heat pumps, package units, supermarket racks, process refrigeration. In practice that means the R-410A and R-22 world you already work in, plus whatever your shop is transitioning to. If a system is not a small appliance shipped with a factory charge and is not a low pressure machine that operates in a vacuum, it is Type II territory.

The section concentrates on four things: leak detection and the repair requirements that follow a leak, recovery and evacuation requirements, recovery techniques and equipment, and safety. Everything else on the section hangs off one of those four.

The Type II and Type III mixup

This is the single most common way people lose Type II. The two sections cover the same concepts with different numbers and different procedures, so studying them together blurs them, and the exam is built to catch exactly that blur. Low pressure systems run in a vacuum, which means the leak you care about most is air and moisture getting in rather than refrigerant getting out, and the evacuation requirement is stated in millimeters of mercury absolute rather than inches of vacuum. High pressure systems are the opposite problem.

The fix is to study them separately and to never write them on the same page of notes. Learn Type II cold, take a practice section on it, then start Type III. If you mix them in one sitting you will remember that a number exists without remembering which system it belongs to, which is worth zero points.

Evacuation levels: learn the shape, then the cells

The required evacuation level before opening a high pressure appliance is not one number. It varies on three axes: which refrigerant the system holds, whether the charge is under or over the 200 pound line, and whether your recovery machine was manufactured before or after the November 1993 cutoff. Once you see that the requirement is a small grid rather than a fact, it stops being memorization and starts being lookup, and the exam questions become readable: they are telling you which cell of the grid you are standing in.

Build that grid yourself, by hand, from your current EPA prep material. Writing it out is the study method, and using current material matters because the rules around refrigerant handling have been amended more than once in recent years. Do not trust a table you found on a forum, and do not trust one you memorized five years ago.

Recovery, in the words the exam uses

  • Recover, recycle, reclaim are legal terms, not synonyms. Recover is removing refrigerant and storing it. Recycle is cleaning it on site with basic filtration. Reclaim is processing it back to virgin specification, verified by chemical analysis, which only an EPA certified reclaimer can do. Questions turn on this distinction constantly.
  • System dependent versus self contained recovery. System dependent, sometimes called passive, uses the appliance's own compressor and pressure to push refrigerant out. Self contained, or active, uses a recovery machine that does the work itself. Know which one is allowed on which size of system.
  • Recovery cylinders are never filled past 80 percent of capacity, they must be DOT approved for the service, and they need to be evacuated and checked for noncondensables before use. Filling by weight on a scale, not by pressure or by feel, is the answer they want.
  • Noncondensables in the recovery cylinder raise pressure and get purged in a specific way. Know the procedure rather than the vibe.

Leak repair, if you touch bigger equipment

Leak repair requirements kick in above a charge threshold and then set an annual leak rate that triggers mandatory repair, with different rates for comfort cooling, commercial refrigeration, and industrial process refrigeration. Learn which category a piece of equipment falls into first, because the category picks the number. Verify the current thresholds in your prep material rather than from memory: this is the area of the rules that has moved most, and the exam grades against the current federal requirements.

How to study the section in a week

Two days building your own tables for evacuation levels and recovery requirements. Two days on procedures, spoken out loud as if you were walking an apprentice through a recovery on a rooftop unit. Then three days of practice questions in the real 25 question format, reviewing every miss until the reason you missed it is obvious. Do not touch Type III until Type II is boring.
